National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is a nationwide observance that encourages people to take action in the fight against HIV/AIDS and raise awareness of its impact on women and girls. It is coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health (OWH). It helps organizations across the country come together to offer support, encourage discussion, and teach women and girls about prevention of HIV, the importance of getting tested for HIV, and how to live with and manage HIV/AIDS.

National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is observed specifically on March 10 every year, but OWH encourages organizations to hold events throughout the month of March.

Today would have been Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 82nd birthday. Martin Luther King, Jr. sacrificed his home life and his life so that we can have equality, justice, and an opportunity for a better life. He raised public consciousness about the civil rights movement and showed the world that America was not living up to its own creed, “All Men are Created Equal.” How can America preach democracy to the world and deprive its citizens their rights.

Martin Luther King established himself as the greatest orator in United States history. King's "I Have A Dream" speech still send chills down my spine. I learned about King at a early age. The more I learned about King's life and heard his speeches the more I became inspired to always to do my best, I gained a sense of pride. This is missing in the younger generation. We have failed to educate Black youth on the sacrifices our ancestors made for us to be able to achieve our dreams, it's never too late. We need to always teach the younger generation about King's legacy, regardless of race.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will always have a special place in my heart. I will make sure that my children will know about King and his contributions to the world, how he paved the way for us. God willing, I will be in Washington, D.C. on the day Martin Luther King, Jr.'s National Memorial is unveiled.

The Grammy® Award Winning song writing duo of Berry and Proulx is set to release their first independent project.

The musical team of Berry and Proulx (pronounced “Prue”) is preparing to release their latest collaboration of Christmas memory. Berry and Proulx joined forces for the 2006 Grammy awarding winning song “These Golden Years” for Nancy Wilson’s “Turned to Blue” CD, placing them firmly on the turn table of the jazz world. This Christmas treatment, simply titled “Christmas” is on target to become a new standard.

“Christmas” featuring vocals by Howard Hewett and Sherry Williams and an instrumental featuring jazz guitarist Brian Nova, provide the flavors of Christmas past and present with the joining of their well developed strengths. Proulx’s romantic music compositions blended with Berry’s fireside lyrics provide this generation with a fresh foundation for their Christmas memories. This CD is music for the season and the heart.

“Chann” began his career at WBLS radio in New York and has moved forward hitting San Francisco’s Bay Area and subsequently being culled by the Walt Disney Studios. He has also written music and/or directed videos for artists such as Chaka Khan, Dionne Warwick, Rosie Gaines, Greg Walker, and jazz vocalist Mary Stallings.

John, a MAXJAZZ artist, is currently working on his third solo project. August 28th marks three significant moments in American history, the death of Emmett Till(1955), Martin Luther King's March on Washington(1963), and then Senator Barack Obama accepts the DNC nomination for President(2008). For me, August 28th will always be remembered for those historical events, nothing can take that away. I honor these men because they are connected.

Emmett Till, was killed at age 14, for reportedly whistling at a white woman at a grocery store in Mississippi. Till was badly beaten and shot in the head. His body was retrieved three days later from the Tallahatchie River. Till's mother had a public funeral, with an open casket, to show the world how ugly America was and became a motivating factor for the Civil Rights Movement.

In 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, leader of the Civil Rights Movement, led a March on Washington and his gave his most memorable "I Have A Dream" speech. Martin Luther King, sacrificed his home life and his life so that we can have equality, justice, and an opportunity for a better life. He raised public consciousness about the civil rights movement and showed the world that America was not living up to its own creed, “All Men are Created Equal.” How can America preach democracy to the world and deprive its citizens their rights.

Without the historical events of Emmett Till and Martin Luther King, there would be no President Barack Obama. The dream King envisioned partially became a reality two years ago today, when then Senator Barack Obama accepted the DNC nomination for and utimately becoming President. The election of President Obama does not mean America is post-racial but it is a start in a new direction. We still have more work to be done. I voted for Barack Obama and don't have any regets. The problems America is facing started long before Obama became President and cannot be solved in a few years.

So for me August 28th will always belong to the Emmett Till, Dr. Martin Luther King, and President Obama. Thank you gentlemen! I am forever grateful.

All women need to know about the human immunodeficiency (IH-myoo-noh-dif-FISH-uhn-see) virus, or HIV. HIV causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, or AIDS, a disease that weakens the body’s ability to fight infection and certain cancers. Having unprotected sex is the main way HIV is spread. It also is spread through injection drug use or from mother to baby during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding.

Every 35 minutes, a woman tests positive for HIV in the United States. More and more women have become infected with HIV since it was first reported in the early 1980s. Today, about 1 in 4 Americans living with HIV are women. It’s time for women to get tested.

The statistics are alarming. But there is good news. Taking some simple steps can protect women from getting HIV — or prevent women from passing it to others, including their children. Also, while there is no cure yet, many women with HIV and AIDS are living longer and stronger lives thanks to a number of new treatments. A wide variety of government resources also are in place to help people living with HIV.

Testing positive
Testing positive for the HIV can bring a range of emotions, such as panic, fear, and anger. But many HIV-positive women find that after some time, they are able to manage their condition and live life to its fullest. If you have just tested positive for HIV, don't give up hope. See Living with HIV/AIDS to help you find a doctor and the support services you will need. Keep in mind, there are people who care about you and want to help you, even if you have no insurance or money. You don't have to go through this alone.

National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

February 7th marks the tenth annual National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD); a national HIV testing and treatment community mobilization initiative designed to increase the awareness of HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment among Blacks in the United States. The theme for NBHAAD 2010 is "HIV/AIDS Prevention: A Choice and a Lifestyle.”

African Americans and HIV/AIDS

The HIV/AIDS epidemic in African American communities is a continuing public health crisis for the United States. At the end of 2006 there were an estimated 1.1 million people living with HIV infection, of which almost half (46%) were black/African American. While blacks represent approximately 12 percent of the U.S. population, they continue to account for a higher proportion of cases at all stages of HIV/AIDS—from infection with HIV to death with AIDS—compared with members of other races and ethnicities. The reasons are not directly related to race or ethnicity, but rather some of the barriers faced by many African Americans. These barriers can include poverty (being poor), and stigma (negative attitudes, beliefs, and actions directed at people living with HIV/AIDS or people who do things that might put them at risk for HIV).

As the impact of the epidemic among African Americans has grown, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), state and local public health agencies, and African American communities have stepped up efforts to address the crisis. One of their efforts includes National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. For 10 years, a group of national organizations, in partnership with CDC, have created and implemented activities focused on motivating African Americans to get tested and learn their HIV status, as well as educating community members about the importance of HIV prevention, early detection, and treatment.

This year’s theme focuses on encouraging African American communities to actively think about HIV/AIDS, its impact on the community, and prevention efforts and strategies available. A wealth of HIV prevention information is available, and African Americans need to receive that information to better protect their health and the health of their loved ones. A collaborative response by many is necessary to decrease the burden of HIV/AIDS in the African American community. Therefore, CDC and African American leaders from business, civil rights organizations, entertainment, government, and the media are speaking out and taking action. When people affected and infected by HIV take collective action against the spread of this disease, our power to control this disease increases.

Together, we can prevent HIV/AIDS, one voice, one experience, one community at a time.

The first day of a new year is always exciting. It represents a new beginning a chance to make a change. As I look forward to the new year, I can only hope that whatever happens I will be mentally, spiritually, physically, and financially ready to handle life's changes.

Predicting the future is impossible but preparing for life is not. There are some changes I will make this year, God willing. I plan on making the most of each day.

World AIDS Day is observed every year on December 1st. The World Health Organization (WHO) established World AIDS Day in 1988 to raise awareness and focus attention on the global AIDS epidemic.

"Universal Access and Human Rights" is this year's theme. World AIDS Day is a reminder that AIDS has not gone away. To achieve the goal everyone must do his/her part in the fight. Governments must get involved and keep the promises they made. Community leaders must encourage its members to take leadership roles in sharing information. Individuals must get tested, know their rights to prevention and treatment, and take action against stigma and discrimination, because HIV/AIDS does not discriminate.

According to AIDS.gov, the estimated number of people living with HIV worldwide is over 33 million, over one million Americans are living with HIV. There are 2.1 million children with the disease. During 2008, 2.7 million people became infected with the virus and an estimated 2 million people died from AIDS. Around half of all people who become infected do so before the age of 25 and die from AIDS before they are 35.

It is important to get tested. Early detection save lives. Effective HIV care - including antiretroviral therapies and regular access to primary health care-can help people manage their HIV disease and live longer. So if you don't know your status, get tested.

Since 1988, the face and response to HIV/AIDS has greatly changed. Throughout the year, I will post information about these changes and how they have impacted communities.

The true cost of war is not measured in money spent, but the loss of a soldier’s life. President Obama saw firsthand the cost of the war.

In the early hours of the morning, President Obama traveled to Dover Air Force Base to witness the arrival and transfer of 18 American killed in Afghanistan earlier this week.

"Obviously it was a sobering reminder of the extraordinary sacrifices that our young men and women in uniform are engaging in every single day. Not only our troops, but their families as well," he said.

"Michelle and I are constantly mindful of those sacrifices. And obviously, the burden that both our troops and their families bear in any wartime situation is gonna bear on how I see these conflicts," he continued. "And it is something that I think abut each and every day."

President Obama’s decision whether or not to send more troops to Afghanistan weighs heavy on his heart, it a decision that shouldn’t be rushed.

The dash between birth and death represents the life a person lives. Ted Kennedy's dash represents a long life filled with trials, tribulations, and triumphs.

Senator Ted Kennedy died Wednesday at his home in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, after a lengthy battle with brain cancer. He was 77.

Born in Boston on February 22, 1932, Ted Kennedy was the youngest of nine children of Joseph P. Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. But as the youngest member of the Kennedy family, Ted bore many of the tragedies of the family. At an early age he became the patriarch of the family. He is the Kennedy we saw grow old.

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor

Sonia Sotomayor was sworn in Saturday as the 111th justice, the third woman, and the first Hispanic to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court.

As her mother, Celina Sotomayor, held the Bible, Sotomayor swore an oath to administer justice fairly in a first ever televised ceremony. Chief Justice John Roberts administered the 62-word oath required of all federal judges.

On Thursday, the Sentate confirmed Sonia Sotomayor to the high court by a vote of 68-31. Though her confirmation was never in doubt, there was opposition from Republicans for her "wise Latina" comment.

Sotomayor is replacing retiring liberal Justice David Souter and is not expected to alter the balance of the court. She joins the only other woman on the Supreme Court, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Newly Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor will be a fine judge. She brings over 17 years of experience as a federeal judge, the most of any current Supreme Court justice.

Michael Jackson, known as the King of Pop, sacrificed a normal childhood and adult life to entertain us. He is a one-of-a-kind artist. Jackson truly deserves the respect and tribute of a King.

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance.

Later attempts to explain this two and a half year delay in the receipt of this important news have yielded several versions that have been handed down through the years. Often told is the story of a messenger who was murdered on his way to Texas with the news of freedom. Another, is that the news was deliberately withheld by the enslavers to maintain the labor force on the plantations. And still another, is that federal troops actually waited for the slave owners to reap the benefits of one last cotton harvest before going to Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. All or none of them could be true. For whatever the reason, conditions in Texas remained status quo well beyond what was statutory.

At 10 a.m. today, President Obama will deliver a major national security speech. President Obama will give a 35-minute speech, at the National Archives, that outlines his principles on national security. Specifically, President Obama will focus on enhanced interrogation techniques, closing Guantanamo Bay and how to handle the detainees.

President Obama seeks to counter the attacks from the conservatives, mainly from former Vice President Dick Cheney, about how to keep the country safe. Cheney has been a vocal critic of Obama’s policies, saying they leave the country vulnerable to terror attacks.

Immediately following President Obama’s speech, Cheney will deliver an address “Keeping America Safe: An Address by Dick Cheney” at the conservative American Enterprise Institute. Cheney will take questions in an open-press appearance.

I'll be watching both speeches.

Wayman Tisdale

Wayman Tisdale, a former NBA player and gifted musician died Friday morning after a two-year batter with cancer. He was 44.

Tisdale learned he had cancer below his right knee after breaking his leg in a fall at his home in Los Angeles in 2007. Tisdale remained upbeat despite having his leg amputated last August.

Wayman Tisdale enjoyed success as a college and professional basketball player and a musician. He played with the Oklahoma Sooners. While at Oklahoma, Tisdale averaged 25.6 points and 10.1 rebounds during his three seasons. He still holds Oklahoma's career scoring record with 2,661 points and a career rebounding record with 1048. Last month, he was chosen for induction into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.

After three years at Oklahoma, Tisdale played 12 years in the NBA with the Indiana Pacers, Sacremento Kings, and the Phoenix Suns. He averaged 15.3 points and 6 rebounds for his career. He was on the U.S. team that won a gold medal in the 1984 Olympics.

Wayman was a gifted, and one of the most popular, jazz musician. My favorite Tisdale song is "Don't Take Your Love Away." I was looking forward to seeing him at the Playbaoy Jazz Festival next month. He will truly be missed.

Wayman Tisdale is survived by his wife, Regina, and four children. God bless the family.

On April 15th, tax day, protesters nationwide will have tea parties to argue for an end to big government, increased deficit spending, and the Obama Administration.

The inspiration for the tea parties came after CNBC host Rick Santelli, who complained about President Obama’s bailout, called for a new Tea Party.

The grassroots movement, publicly pushed by conservative media and officially endorsed by the Republican Party, was organized by COMMUNITY ORGANIZERS. How ironic, since it was the Republicans who dismissed the work of COMMUNITY ORGANIZERS during their presidential convention.

I guess Republicans feel it is okay to associate with COMMUNITY ORGANIZERS when they are criticizing the Obama Administration, but as a COMMUNITY ORGANIZER, I wouldn’t want to be associated with the Republican Party.

Dr. John Hope Franklin, noted scholar and historian of African American history, died yesterday at the age of 94. He dedicated his life to educating the world about the black experience and helping to reshape and define civil rights.

Franklin died of congestive heart failure at Duke Hospital. He is survived by his son, John Whittington Franklin, daughter-in-law Karen Roberts Franklin, sister-in-law Bertha W. Gibbs, cousin Grant Franklin Sr., a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, other family members, many generations of students and friends.

I almost pulled out my hair yesterday watching the
Bruins play VCU. In a close game, the Bruins kept their tournament hopes alive beating VCU 65-64.

The Bruins play Villanova on Saturday. Villanova, a higher seed, will be a tougher opponent. The Bruins can't afford to make mistakes.

The NCAA Tournament is called "March Madness" for a reason. The games are exciting and will drive you mad. Gotta love college basketball.

March 10th is National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Service, Office on Women's Health is the lead for this day. The 2009 theme is "HIV is Right Here at Home".

The Facts
In 2005, women represented 26 percent of new AIDS diagnoses, compared to only 11 percent of new AIDS cases reported in 1990. Most women are infected with HIV through heterosexual contact and injection drug use.

Women of color are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. AIDS is now the leading cause of death for Black women ages 25 to 34.

Take Action
There are many ways you can take action in response to HIV/AIDS:
Get tested for HIV
Practice safer methods to prevent HIV
Decide not to engage in high risk behaviors
Talk about HIV prevention with family, friends, and colleagues
Provide support to people living with HIV/AIDS

LIFE LESSONS

The past two weeks have been emotional. Between celebrating birthdays of friends, mourning the loss of a friend who died unexpectedly, and trying to write a letter of inteterest for an internship program has left me exhausted. I am currently sick.

I'm a firm believer that there are lessons in every aspect of life. Each person has a responsibility to figure out life's lessons, it's a way to grow as a human being. Sometimes it is hard and sometimes it is easy.

The one lesson I've learned is that life happens and there is nothing you can do about it, hopefully, you enjoy it. I can honestly say I enjoy life.

In the final Pro Bowl game to be played in Hawaii, the NFC beat the AFC, 30-21, ending a 30-year run. Starting next season, the Pro Bowl will be played before the Super Bowl, the first time ever that the Pro Bowl is held before the championship game.

Congratulations to the NFC and Arizona Cardinal Larry Fitzgerald who was named MVP.

I'm sad, football is over until next season.

National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

February 7th, 2009 marks the ninth annual National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD). This is a national community mobilization effort designed to encourage African Americans across the United States and Territorial areas to Get Educated, Get Tested, Get Treated, and Get Involved with HIV/AIDS. This year's theme is "Black Life is Worth Saving."

Of all racial and ethnic groups in the United States, HIV and AIDS have hit African Americans the hardest. In 2008, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released its long-awaited study re-examining the size and depth of the U.S. epidemic. Using new technology that allows researchers to learn more detail about individual HIV infections, the CDC discovered, among other things:

• The U.S. epidemic is at least 40 percent larger than previously believed and growing by between 55,000 and 58,000 infections a year;

• The U.S. has never logged fewer than 50,000 new infections a year, contrary to prior belief that we leveled out at 40,000 new infections a year in the mid-1990s;

• Black Americans represented 45 percent of people newly infected in 2006, despite being just 13 percent of the population;

• Men who have sex with men accounted for 53 percent of all new infections in 2006, and young Black men were particularly hard hit.

• In 2006, Black gay and bisexual men between the ages of 13 and 29 accounted for more new HIV infections among gay and bisexual men than any other race or age group. And more than half, or 52 percent, of all Black gay and bi men infected that year were under 30 years old.
Deaths. The racial disparity in AIDS deaths continued in data released last year:

• In 2006, the latest year for which data is available, 7,426 Black Americans died from AIDS. That number represents a meaningful improvement over the previous year—a decline of 1,253 deaths.

• But Blacks continue to represent a far outsized proportion of deaths each year. In 2006, Blacks accounted for just over half of all AIDS deaths.
The 2009 State of AIDS in Black America report includes a chart pack—“The Black Epidemic: By the Numbers,” which details key data about the black epidemic.
Resources. The federal commitment to all areas of AIDS work—prevention, treatment and research—has all but disappeared.

• The CDC’s annual HIV-prevention budget has never topped $800 million—a fraction of what the U.S. spends on the Iraq war in a week;

• The prevention budget has been cut by 20 percent in the past five years, in real dollar terms;

• The CDC spent just under $369 million on Black-specific prevention and research in fiscal year 2008, or 49 percent of the overall budget.

• Between 2004 and 2008, the discretionary domestic AIDS budget remained virtually flat, while global spending increased by more than 20 percent annually.

In a thriller, the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Arizona Cardinals, 27-23, to become the first team to win a record-setting sixth Super Bowl titles.

After the Cardinals scored with 2:37 left in the game, Ben Roethlisberger took the Steelers 78-yards to throw the winning pass. Santonio Holmes made a spectacular catch 6-yards in the end zone to regain the lead and the game. Santonio Holmes won the MVP.

Today would have been Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 80th birthday. Martin Luther King, Jr. sacrificed his home life and his life so that we can have equality, justice, and an opportunity for a better life. He raised public consciousness about the civil rights movement and showed the world that America was not living up to its own creed, “All Men are Created Equal.” How can America preach democracy to the world and deprive its citizens their rights.

Martin Luther King, Jr. established himself as the greatest orator in United States history. King’s “I Have a Dream’ speech still send chills down my spine. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will always have a special place in my heart. I will make sure that my children will know about Dr. King and his contributions to the world, how he paved the way for us. God willing, I will be in Washington, D.C. on the day Martin Luther King, Jr.’s National Memorial is unveiled.

The first day of a new year is always exciting. It represents a new beginning a chance to make a change. As I look forward to the new year, I can only hope that whatever happens I will be mentally, spiritually, physically, and financially ready to handle life's changes.

Predicting the future is impossible but preparing for life is not. There are some changes I will make this year, God willing. I plan on making the most of each day.

I hope 2009 brings you a year full of life's joy. January 1st is the start of a new year, but every morning is the start of a new day. Live for each day and not for every new year. Enjoy life!

Ms. Eartha Kitt

Eartha Kitt, a singer, dancer and actress died at the age of 81.

Andrew Freedman, a family spokeman, said Kitt had been treated at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, died of colon cancer.

Ms. Kitt, a self-proclaimed "sex-kitten" rose from South Carolina cotton fields to become an international symbol of elegance and sensuality. Her career spanned six decades with her winning two Emmys and earning nominations for a third Emmy, several Tonys and two Grammy Awards.

Ms. Kitt, was a versatile entertainer performing on stage, in movies and on television. Kitt, famous for her catlike purr, took over the role of Catwoman on the popular "Batman" series in 1967-68, replacing Julie Newman.

A talented singer with a distinctive voice released the sultry "Santa Baby" which is played every Christmas. I have this song as my Christmas ringtone.

Her last performance, a PBS special, scheduled to air in February, was taped six weeks ago. Orson Welles called her the "most exciting woman in the world." I couldn't agree more.

Today, marks the 20th Anniversary of World AIDS Day. The World Health Organization(WHO) established World AIDS Day in 1988 to raise awareness and focus attention on the global AIDS epidemic.

According to AIDS.gov, the estimated number of people living with HIV worldwide is over 33 million, over one million Americans are living with HIV.

"Leadership-Stop AIDS.Keep the Promise" is this year's theme. People living with HIV and AIDS (PLHIV) and their supporters are the driving force in the fight against the disease. They have taken the lead in asking questions and getting global leaders and governments fully involved in the fight, but the struggle continues. Without PLHIV leadership, universal access to prevention, treatment and care will remain a dream.

To achieve the goal, everyone must do his/her part in the fight. Governments must get involved and keep the promises they made. Community leaders must encourage its members to take leadership roles in sharing information. Individuals must get tested, know their rights to prevention and treatment, and take action against stigma and discrimination, because HIV/AIDS does not discriminate.

It is important to get tested. Early detection save lives. Effective HIV care - including antiretroviral therapies and regular access to primary health care-can help people manage their HIV disease and live longer. So if you don't know your status, get tested.

Since 1988, the face and response to HIV/AIDS has greatly changed. All week and throughout the year, I will post information about these changes and how they have impacted communities.

A Star Studded Affair.

Guests began arriving early. There are no place cards and no name tags. Everyone knows everyone else here. The Rev. Nat Turner will open the Inaugural Celebration with prayers of Thanksgiving, while John Brown assures his sons that Harper's Ferry was not the beginning and that this Inaugural Ball will not be the end, but the Dawn of a New Beginning.

Now, there's a grand foursome - Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz sharing laughs with Martin and Coretta Scott King. Looks like Hosea Williams refused the limo again, keeping it real. And my goodness; is that Rosa Parks out there on the dance floor with A. Phillip Randolph? Seated at a nearby table, Frederick Douglass has a captive audience in W.E.B. DuBois and Fannie Lou Hamer, and Medgar Evers has just joined them.

Marian Anderson was asked to sing tonight, but she only agreed to do it if accompanied by Marvin Gaye, John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix. Look, there's Harriet Tubman. No one knows how she arrived, but there she is. And my guess is that, when the time comes, no one will see her leave

There's Jackie Robinson swiftly making his way through the hall as the crowd parts like the Red Sea to the unmistakable sound of applause. "Run, Jackie, run!" Along the way he is embraced by Jessie Owens.

Three beautiful young women arrive with their escorts - Schwerner, Goodman and Chaney. Ms. Viola Liuzzo flew in from Michigan, exclaiming, "I could not miss this." Richard Pryor promised to be on his best behavior. "But I can't make any guarantees for Redd Foxx and Moms Mabley," he chuckled.

Joe Louis just faked a quick jab to the chin of Jack Johnson, who smiled broadly while slipping it. We saw Billy Eckstine and Nat King Cole greet Luther Vandross. James Brown and Josh Gibson stopped at Walter Payton's table to say hello.

I spotted Congressman Adam Clayton Powell of Harlem having a lively political discussion with Eldredge Cleaver. Pearl Harbor WWII hero Dorey Miller shared a few thoughts with Crispus Attucks, a hero of the Revolutionary War.

And there is Madam C.J. Walker talking with Marcus Garvey about exporting goods to Africa. General Benjamin O. Davis flew into Washington safely with an escort from the 99th Fighter Squadron - better known as The Tuskegee Airman. At the table on the left are three formidable women - Shirley Chisholm, Sojourner Truth, and Barbara Jordan - gathered for a little girl-talk... about world politics. As usual, all the science nerds seem to have gathered off in a corner, talking shop.

There's Granville T. Woods and Lewis Latimer needling each other about whose inventions are better. Someone jokingly asked Benjamin Banneker if he had needed directions to Washington. And George Washington Carver was overheard asking, "What, no peanuts?" Dualing bands? Anytime Duke Ellington and Count Basie get together, you know the place will be jumping.

Tonight is special, of course, so we have Miles, Dizzy, and Satchmo sitting in on trumpet, with Coltrane, Cannonball, and Bird on sax. Everyone's attention is directed to the dance floor where Bill "Bojangles" Robinson is tap dancing. Right beside him is Sammy Davis Jr., doing his Bojangles routine. And behind his back, Gregory Hines is imitating them both. Applause and laughter abound! The Hollywood contingent has just arrived from the Coast. Led by filmmaker Oscar Micheau, Paul Robeson, Cana a Lee, and Hattie McDaniel, they find their way to their tables. Dorothy Dandridge, looking exquisite in gold lame is seen signaling to her husband, Harold Nicholas,who is standing on the floor with brother Fayard watching Gregory Hines dance."Hold me back," quips Harold, "before I show that youngster how it's done." Much laughter! Then a sudden hush comes over the room. The guests of honor have arrived.

The President and Mrs. Obama looked out across the enormous ballroom at all the historic faces. Very many smiles, precious few dry eyes.Someone shouted out,"You did it! You did it!" and President Obama replied,"No sir, you did it; you all - each and every one of you - did it. Your guidance and encouragement; your hard work and perseverance . . .." Obama paused, perhaps holding back a tear. "I look at your faces - your beautiful faces - and I am reminded that The White House was built by faces that looked just like yours.

On October 3, 1792, the cornerstone of the White House was laid, and the foundations and main residence of The White House were built mostly by both enslaved and free African Americans and paid Europeans. In fact, most of the other construction work was performed by immigrants, many of whom had not yet become citizens. Much of the brick and plaster work was performed by Irish and Italian immigrants. The sandstone walls were built by Scottish immigrants. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that The White House is, ultimately, The People's House, with each President serving as its steward.

Since1792 The People have trimmed its hedges, mowed its lawn, stood guard at the gate, cooked meals in the kitchen, and scrubbed its toilet bowls. But 216 years later, The People are taking it back! "Today, Michelle and I ushered in a new era. But while we and our family look toward the future with so much hope, we know that we must also acknowledge fully this milestone in our journey. We want to thank each and every one of you for all you have done to make this day possible. I stand here before you, humbled and in awe of your accomplishments and sacrifice, and I will dedicate my Presidency, in your honor, to the principles of peace,liberty and freedom. If it ever appears that I'm forgetting that, I know I can count on you to remind me." It's gonna be a good day.

I am so nervous as I wait for the first polls to start closing. After almost two years of following this election and supporting Obama, I am like a mother who is waiting to hear if her child will be okay. I have faith that everything will be okay, but there is always the unknown. The unknown of which I have no control. I prayed for Obama and this country because Lord knows we need it.

My family and I will be watching every news program and pundit dissect this election. We will be videotaped for a documentary. I hope Obama wins. I must have faith that he will win.

Officials in early voting states are reporting record voter turnout and expect a higher than normal turnout on Tuesday, November 4th. I recommend you vote early and be prepared to stand in line.

Remember, political attire is not allowed at polling places. Some people have been turned away because they wore political clothing. Don't give officials at polling places a reason to turn you away, we need every vote to count.

If change is to happen we need record turnout in each state. Obama needs to win the state. The popular vote does not decide the presidency, remember Al Gore. Ask family, friends, and neighbors if they need a ride to the polls. Voting is not only important, it is imperative.

Colin Powell Endorses Barack Obama

In an interview today on "Meet the Press", former Secretary of State, Colin Powell endorsed Sen. Barack Obama.

The full transcript of Powell's speech:

I know both of these individuals very well. I’ve known John for 25 years, as your set-up said, and I’ve gotten to know Mr. Obama quite well over the past 2 years. Both of them are distinguished Americans who are patriotic, who are dedicated to the welfare of our country. Either one of them, I think, would be a good president.

I have said to Mr. McCain that I admore all he has done. I have some concerns about the direction that the party has taken in recent years it has moved more to the right than I would like to see it, but that’s a choice the party makes.

And I’ve said to Mr. Obama, you have to pass a test of ‘do you have enough experience?’ And do you bring the judgment to the table that would give us confidence that you would be a good president.

And I’ve watched them over the past two years frankly, and I’ve had this conversation with them.

I have especially watched over the last 6 or 7 weeks as both of them have really taken a final exam with respect to this economic crisis that we’re in and coming out of the conventions.

And I must say that I’ve gotten a good measure of both, and in the case of Mr. McCain, I found that he was a little unsure as to how to deal with the economic problems that we were having. And almost every day there was a different approach to the problem.

And that concerned me, sensing that he did not have a complete grasp of the economic problems that we had. And I was also concerned at the selection of Governor Palin. She’s a very distinguished woman, and she’s to be admired, but at the same time, now that we have had a chance to watch her for some seven weeks, I don’t believe she’s ready to be President of the United States, which is the job of the Vice President. And so that raised some question in my mind as to the judgment that Senator McCain made.

On the Obama side, I watched Mr. Obama, and I watched him during this 7-week period. And he displayed a steadiness, an intellectual curiosity, a depth of knowledge, and an approach to looking at problems like this and picking a Vice President that I think is ready to be president on day one, and also in, not just jumping in and changing every day, but show intellectual vigor. I think that he has a definitive way of doing business that would serve us well.

I also believe that on the Republican side, over the last 7 weeks the approach of the Republican Party and Mr. McCain has become narrower and narrower. Mr. Obama at the same time has given us some more broader inclusive reach into the needs and aspirations of our people. He’s crossing lines-- ethnic lines, racial lines, generational lines. He’s thinking about all villages have values, all towns have values, not just small towns have values. And I’ve also been disappointed frankly by some of the approaches that Senator McCain has taken recently, or his campaign has, on issues that are not really central to the problems that the American people are worried about. This Bill Ayers situation that’s been going on for weeks became something of a central point of the campaign, but Mr. McCain says he’s a washed out terrorist—well, why do we keep talking about him? And why do we have these robocalls going on around the country trying to suggest that because of this very, very limited relationship, that Senator Obama has had with Mr. Ayers, now Mr. Obama is tainted. What they’re trying to connect him to is some kind of terrorist feelings, and I think that’s inappropriate.

Now I understand what politics is all about, I know how you can go after one another. And that’s good. But I think this goes too far. And I think it has made the McCain campaign look a little narrower. It’s not what the American people are looking for.

And I look at these kinds of approaches to the campaign and they trouble me. And the party has moved even further to the right, and Governor Palin has indicated a further rightward shift. I would have difficulty with two more conservative appointments to the Supreme Court, but that’s what we would be looking at in a McCain administration.

I’m also troubled by…what members of the party say, and is permitted to be said, such things as, ‘Well you know that Mr. Obama is a Muslim.’ Well, the correct answer is, 'He is not a Muslim, he’s a Christian, he’s always been a Christian.'But the really right answer is, 'What if he is? Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country?'The answer’s 'No, that’s not America.'

Is there something wrong with some 7-year-old Muslim American kid believing that he or she could be president? Yet I have heard senior members of my own party drop the suggestion he’s a Muslim and he might be associated with terrorists. This is not the way we should be doing it in America. I feel strongly about this particular point because of a picture I saw in a magazine. It was a photo essay about troops who were serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. And one picture, at the tail end of this photo essay, was of a mother in Arlington Cemetery, and she had her head on the headstone of her son’s grave, and as the picture focused in, you could see the writing on the headstone. And it gave his awards, purple heart, bronze star, showed that he died in Iraq, gave his date of birth, date of death, he was 20 years old, and then at the very top of the headstone, it didn’t have a Christian cross, it didn’t have a Star of David, it had a crescent and a star of the Islamic faith. And his name was Kareem Ushad Sultan Khan. And he was an American. He was born in New Jersey. He was 14 years old at the time of 9/11. And he waited until he could go serve his country, and he gave his life.

Now we have got to stop polarizing ourselves in this way. And John McCain is as nondiscriminatory as anyone I know, but I’m troubled about the fact that within the party, we have these kinds of expressions.

So when I look at all of this and I think back to my army career, we’ve got two individuals. Either on of them could be a good president. But which is the president that we need now? Which is the individual that serves the needs of the nation for the next period of time? And I’ve come to the conclusion that because of his ability to inspire, because of the inclusive nature of his campaign, because he is reaching out all across America, because of who he is and his rhetorical abilities, as well as his substance, he has both style and substance, he has met the standard of being a successful president being an exceptional president, I think he is a transformational figure, he is a new generation, coming onto the world stage, the American stage,

And for that reason, I will be voting for Barack Obama.

Appearing on Fox News Sunday, John McCain said he respectfully disagreed with Powell's decision, but "this doesn't come as a surprise."

I think Powell's endorsement is an indictment on the McCain-Palin ticket and the Republican Party. He really brought home why Obama is the best person to be president and why Americans need to stop the negative rhetoric in political campaigns.

A LADY’S PERSPECTIVE RECOGNIZES NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Lawndale, CA– October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM). Since the program began in 1985, mammography rates have more than doubled for women age 50 and older and breast cancer deaths have declined.

This is exciting progress, but there are still women who do not take advantage of early detection at all and others who do not get screening mammograms and clinical breast exams at regular intervals.

·Women age 65 and older are less likely to get mammograms than younger women, even though breast cancer risk increases with age.
·Hispanic women have fewer mammograms than Caucasian women and African American women.
·Women below poverty level are less likely than women at higher incomes to have had a mammogram within the past two years.
·Mammography use has increased for all groups except American Indians and Alaska Natives.

“If all women age 40 and older took advantage of early detection methods – mammography plus clinical breast exam – breast cancer death rates would drop much further, up to 30 percent.

“The key to mammography screening is that it be done routinely – once is not enough.”

To Debate or Not to Debate!

Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain called for his rival Barack Obama to join him in suspending their campaigns, postponing Friday's debate, and work together to deal with the financial crisis.

McCain, speaking at former President Clinton's Global Initiative session in New York, said he would put politics aside and return to Washington to focus on the nation's financial problems.

Sen. Barack Obama agreed with Sen. McCain about dealing with the financial crisis but rejected his call for postponing the debate. In a press conference today, Sen. Obama said "I think it is going to be part of the president's job to deal with more than one thing at once. I don't see why we can't be constructive in helping with this problem."

McCain insists he will not attend the debate if no agreement is reached on the bailout. He is also proposing that the VP debate be postponed indefinitely.

I hope Sen. Obama continues to demand the debate. A president has to be able to multi-task, to handle the problems of the the United States and the world. If McCain cannot handle this crisis and campaign how does he expect to handle the presidency.

The nomination came after Sen. Clinton called for Obama to be approved by acclamation midway through the roll call by states. Delegates chanted "Obama" and "Yes We Can" as Obama's victory was sealed.
